The definition of self-awareness, which in the US is defined as: “an attitude or attitude that you feel comfortable with, that you want to take that away from.” I wouldn’t make this definition too broad, but it’s a clear statement of what I mean here, from the standpoint of my own thinking and personal life.
I would not use this definition of self-awareness as it might imply that one has to be a special person to be a self-aware person. I think this is a great definition that I can feel comfortable using too.
I would say that self-awareness is a positive feeling that is more than just an attitude, it is a feeling that one has when one is aware of something. If I am feeling uncomfortable with something I am aware of though, it doesnt mean that I am uncomfortable with myself. I might just be aware of something that is bothering me, but that doesnt mean that I am uncomfortable with myself.
Self-awareness means that we know it when we feel it. It is when we are aware of something, when we have an emotion, that there is another person or thing watching us and observing our reaction to that thing. For example, I could feel a headache coming on and know that I could google myself and find out what that is. I could feel a chill coming on and know what that means. I could feel a need to pee and feel a need to stop and do that.
Self-awareness is when we get it when we feel it. But when we feel it, we can’t always recognize it for what it is. For the most part, we can call it self-awareness when we know we are on autopilot. We can recognize the feeling of depression, we can recognize it when someone tells us they’re sick, we can recognize it when we need to pee.
On the other hand, we can’t recognize when we’re on autopilot. For example, a friend of mine asked if I was feeling depressed. I looked at her and said that I wasn’t and then she asked, “well, why are you depressed?” I said, “I’m not depressed, I’m just feeling very tired lately.
This happens all too often when we’re on autopilot, and it’s especially difficult when we’re on autopilot while we’re trying to do something new or trying to be more attentive to our surroundings and what’s around us. For example, a lot of artists will paint a series of paintings, then paint on top of them a second series of paintings.
Its frustrating when we do things like this because we don’t really know what we’ve done. We’re so used to sitting at a computer, working, and doing nothing that the next thing we do, we know what we’ve done, but we’re not sure if we can do it again.
It’s also possible that our actions are just a symptom of our mind’s inertia. It’s also possible that the actions we do are not truly part of our thoughts and actions, but are simply a distraction from our thoughts and actions. Either way, we need to stop and think about it. A lot of the time we are so caught up in the things we do that we don’t even realize how much of our thoughts and actions are autopilot.
